Dr. Sundine has started using the technique of distraction osteogenesis to help treat children with jaw abnormalities. By gradually pulling apart bone ends following an osteotomy, bone will form in the gap and the mandible can be lengthened. This technique has been used to prevent children with Pierre Robin sequence from requiring a tracheostomy.
