Otoplasty

Otoplasty is a procedure for setting back, pinning, or reducing large prominent ears. Prominent ears can be the result of several factors. A common reason for prominent ears is a poorly developed or lack of an antihelical fold, which is the fold just inside the rim of the ear. There may also be conchal hypertrophy, which is an enlargement of the bowl of the ear. There may also be a combination of both conchal hypertrophy and a poorly developed antihelical fold.

Prominent ears are typically corrected around age 5-8 when the children become conscious of their appearance, but can performed as early as age 4.

Otoplasty is performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. The procedure takes around 2-2 hours to perform. The incisions and scars are all on the back of the ear. Sutures are used to help create the antihelical fold and a piece of the cartilage of the bowl of the ear may have to be removed to reduce a large conchal bowl.

With his extensive experience in both aesthetic and reconstructive surgery of the ear (creation of ears for children born without ears (microtia) or very deformed and small ears), Dr. Sundine has years of experience to provide optimal outcomes with this difficult procedure.
